Garth and Myron

So the word came down on Garth Drabinsky and Myron Gottlieb today.

Not looking so good.

Richard Ouzounian of the Toronto Star had this video up the day yesterday. It doesn't seem to have a permalink so go now and view quickly.

Curious what you think about Ouzounian's video... Agree/disagree?

Hey Kelly,

Well yes it was an exciting time theatrically but it was bought at the expense of the investors. So in the long run people pulled away from investing in theatre instead of re-investing. Thus we have ended up poorer instead of richer. If they had only been fiscally resopnsible then that creativity might have continued and grown instead of falling by the way.

Having worked once upon a time at Cineplex Odeon and having had the misfortune of seeing Garth's way of doing things up close, I can't help but feel satisfaction it has gone down this way.

I remember my former boss (who was supposed to be the food & beverage manager at the Pantages IIRC) being driven crazy by head office constantly changing how things were to be done in the month before Phantom opened. Then they fired him a week from opening because they weren't happy. They treated the front-line staff like serfs. (However, if you were the talent they treated you like kings, which is why Ouzounian is still an apologist. )

So I wasn't surprised to hear they thought they were above standard financial practises too. And while many of my friends lost their jobs when Live Ent went down, I'm glad to see that karma works.
